Senior Director Global Total Transportation


The Company:

A member of an $18-Billion-dollar international company.  A US-Based International leader of third party specialty logistics, cold chain solutions, distribution and global transportation of temperature and time sensitive products.  Serving the government and life science industry with timely distribution of pharmaceutical samples, clinical trials supplies and military supplies.

Scope of the Job:

This position reports to the Vice President and General Manager Logistics and will be located in Memphis, TN, Horsham, PA, Allentown, PA or remotely.  As Global Director Total Transportation Management, the successful candidate will assume full responsibility of driving growth in the Total Transportation Management service offering globally.  You will build strategic customer relationships, develop a world-class logistics management team and support the commercial organization as a subject matter expert of the service line.  Other responsibilities include developing strong internal corporate partnerships to enable expansion of the Total Transportation Management offering.  The incumbent will drive strategic investments in personnel and systems to effectively manage a growing logistics offering.  Finally you will develop a global operating model that is scalable, quality focused, and patient centric.

We seek an innovative growth-oriented business leader who has demonstrated strategic skills in global 3PL life sciences supply chain logistics.  The successful candidate will be adept at organizational design and development and will have a proven track record of accomplishment.

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Develops sales strategy and value proposition to expand customer base and develop new relationships within pharmaceutical supply chains.
  • Provides effective leadership to meet or exceed the financial goals of the service line.
  • Develops Total Transportation Management service line budget and manage to those commitments.
  • Owns Total Transportation Management growth strategy and value proposition.
  • Oversees sourcing resources and create strategies to manage vendor base of transportation providers to deliver optimal performance balancing quality, service, and cost. Ensure organizational structures, processes and systems are scalable to support a global service line.
  • Works with corporate wide global business units to collaborate on the over-all Transportation strategy and solutions that best meet the client’s needs.
  • Develops and executes sales strategies designed to support the attainment of revenue goals.
  • Reviews sales performance against plans and performance standards. Interprets results, communicates to subordinates and approves changes in direction of plans.
  • Directs monitors and effectively appraises the performance of all direct reports providing training and development activities where appropriate and holds staff accountable for their ongoing performance to specified standards.
  • Model and foster excellent customer service (internal & external) in all functions and responsibilities.
  • Models Corporate Role Model Leadership competencies in all interactions.
  • Demonstrates and promotes the company and Division’s mission and vision.
  • Generates and Delivers Performance Evaluations on time.
  • Identifies resource needs and effectively advocates for approval of needed investments.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by manager.

Candidate Requirements 

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in third party logistics, distribution and warehousing, with exposure to freight forwarding, specialty courier, warehousing, and distribution.
  • Minimum of 5 years distribution center management experience and 5 years customer service experience.
  • MBA or Advanced degree in the sciences.
  • Transportation, supply chain or logistics certifications.
  • Results-oriented with strong decision-making ability.
  • Participative management style with well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with and develop diverse personalities.
  • Sound administrative skills and well-developed management skills.
  • Proven ability to motivate people.
  • Proven track record of success.
  • BS/BA degree in business or the sciences, advanced degree preferred.
  • 15 years of experience within the life sciences logistics industry and 5 years progressive business management experience.
  • 7+ years of management plus 5 years of customer facing experience.
  • Familiarity with clinical supply chain, third party logistics and sourcing.
  • Experience managing individuals directly or indirectly.
  • Experience in managing budgets and accountability for delivering financial targets required.
  • Willing to travel at least 30-40% of the time.
  • Communicate strategy and results to the unit’s employees.
  • Concise writing and public speaking/presentation skills are desirable for reporting to the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgement and decision making in a complex and fast-moving environment.
  • Track record of developing and implementing strategies to drive service line growth.
